Mathematics Education of UAD FKIP holds a Studium Generale with SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics
Yogyakarta. Located in the Islamic Center Hall of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD), the Mathematics Education Study Program of UAD FKIP held a Studium Generale with the topic of “Numeracy and mathematical knowledge: using common sense and building models”. The speaker of the event was Assoc. Prof. Marteen Dolk from Utrecht University, Netherlands. The opening of the event was carried out by the Head of Mathematics Education Study Program of UAD FKIP, Drs. Abdul Taram, M.Si. He stated that this event was conducted by UAD mathematics education, in collaboration with SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics (South East Asian Ministers of Education Organization, Regional Center of Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel in Mathematics) and the event was important to help teachers and educational personnel build 21st century skills. “It is important for pre-service teachers to get information on this topic in order to mould their 21st century skills”, said Taram.
The speaker of the event, who is also the Head of IMPoME (International Master Program Mathematics Education), conveyed how mathematics makes learning easier for students, especially in the concept of numeration. Therefore, it can motivate students to like mathematics. “The concept of numeration should be applied in a real context in everyday life,” explained Marteen.
The event was held on Thursday, 14 September 2017 and was attended by all mathematics education students from the superior program and 1st semester students from the regular program with a total of 230 students. The activity was interactive and students looked enthusiastic and interested in taking part in the event (H3).
